1:1 computing arrives for Year 8’s

NET COMMUNICATIONS PRESS RELEASE 150 Eolas 2 for St Mary’s College, Derry St Mary’s College celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2010 with a move to a new hi-tech campus at the heart of the Digital Corridor on the Northland Road, Derry. Here pupils have access to state of the art facilities and vibrant learning spaces. In October 2012, the school introduced 150 Eolas 2 to their year eight students (the equivalent of first year in ROI) for use in all subjects. The Eolas 2 is a three-in-one piece of learning technology, combining tablet PC, eBook reader and notebook in a ruggedized chassis. The school is proudly progressive and forward thinking in their approach to technology. Their innovation and leadership has been recognized by their acceptance into Microsoft’s Mentor Schools programme. This elite group of schools benefits from Microsoft’s help in driving innovation processes, technologies, and environments that further improve student learning. Having looked at a number of tablet and notebook solutions for one-to-one learning, a number of factors made the Eolas 2 stand out; ICT manager Paul Wade explains: “They are ruggedized to withstand wear and tear in a busy classroom environment, which was a big plus. Also, Microsoft OneNote is one of the main applications we use in the school, and the Eolas 2 can support this, as it comes with Windows 7 and Office 2010. When we visited Co. Meath VEC who had been using them for a while, and sat in on some lessons we were blown away.” As well as engaged students and improved learning outcomes, other benefits include progression towards a green paperless environment, and a platform ready for the introduction of eBooks in the New Year. The school is located in a competitive environment and hopes that the Eolas 2 will help attract students to the school. “We can see it has been a good choice for us already, and would be confident recommending the solution,” continues Paul. The Eolas 2 project will be officially launched by Mark Nagurski, CEO, Digital Derry Ventures, at the school on Wednesday 12th December.
