Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2013

Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2013

Our news topic is Radio 1’s Big Weekend which will take place in our city this year. This will be the second time that the Big Weekend has happened in Derry. The official One Big Weekend started in 2003 with each event occurring bi-annually over two days. Its first visit to Derry was in 2003 as part of Music Lives Campaign. This year will be the first time that it will open on a Friday and will take place over three days. This event will take place in Ebrington Square. We interviewed Gemma Cairney for a 13-13 project related to B.B.C. News Day. We also took the opportunity to ask Gemma a few questions about Radio 1’s One Big weekend to see if we could get any secrets! Listen to what Gemma told us on the link. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schoolreport/21785506 This is what some people in the city told us. Mayor Kevin Campbell; “The Radio 1 Big Weekend event in 2004 was a huge event for the city and region and we are delighted that BBC Radio 1 has decided to come back to Derry and bring some of the world’s top performing artists to be part of our City of Culture celebrations. The return of Europe’s biggest free ticketed music event is a huge coup for the city and we are hugely excited about it.” Jason Carter; the BBC's Head of Live Music and Events, Popular Music, said: “The last Big Weekend in the city in 2004 was a legendary music moment in Northern Ireland and it's so great to be able to return with an even bigger show second time around." City of Culture 2013 chairman Martin Bradley says: “We’ve already seen a wonderful, varied, diverse programme of events unveiled with something for everyone to enjoy,” he said. “As we saw in the wonderful opening Sons and Daughters concert, Derry/Londonderry prides itself as a city of music and there is no better place for Radio 1 to come to than here this year. It’s going to be one huge party which will take the City of Culture celebrations to a whole new level over the course of a fantastic weekend.” SDLP Mark Durkan said; “This is an announcement that has excited many people in the City and there is a real buzz about it. Many have fond memories of the last time we hosted One Big Weekend several years ago and many younger people who missed that are looking forward to this time around. Derry showed with Sons and Daughters that we can put on a great show and this is another chance for us to showcase the city to a UK wide audience.
