St Mary's College continued its 50th Anniversary celebrations with a Gala Concert in the Millennium Forum on Tuesday 17th November at 8.00pm.
It was an extravaganza of music featuring a host of Past and Presents pupils among them Hollywood and West End actress Bronagh Gallagher, who is flew back from Los Angeles specially to perform on stage.
Recording artist and former pupil Marie Murray also travelled home for this very special evening of celebration. She was accompanied by her brother Feargal on piano, Jane Hughes on cello and Ewan Cowley on Guitar - all originally from Derry but now living in Dublin and working as professional musicians.
Laura Doherty, of Pop Idol Fame performed on stage with her band. Laura's talents as a dance teacher were also be on display as she has choreographed a special "Dance Extravaganza" for the occasion.
Two more recent past pupils Emer McCallion and Rachel Harkin, now both music undergraduates who have achieved numerous prizes and bursaries at local feiseanna once again performed for St Mary's.
Our prizewinning School Choir, fresh from their success in the RTE All Island Choir Competition treated the audience to a feast of musical delights.
The newly formed Past Pupil choir made their debut performance at the concert.
The Irish Dancing has always featured in the life of the school and one of our past pupils, Michaela Temple, now a prize-winning Irish Dance Teacher returned to assist with a spectacular dance routine specially composed for the evening.
As a special treat children from feeder Primary Schools reprised the School Room Scene from "The King and I" which was staged in the school a number of years ago. The role of the King was played by Mr Pat McCafferty, of the McCafferty School of Music. Pat was delighted to accept the part as a tribute to his late father James, who was appointed as the first Music Teacher in St Mary's when it opened in 1959.
It was a wonderful show and tributes have been flowing into the school ever since.
