As Derry develops its campaign to become UK City of Culture 2013, one local teenager is looking forward to the opportunities that a successful bid could provide.
Georgina Breslin, a pupil of St Mary's College, is a busy young lady. As well as currently studying for her GCSEs, she has found time to be involved in a number of cultural initiatives that have helped develop her understanding of just what this city is about and what it has to offer.
Through her involvement with the Verbal Arts Centre radio station, Verbal FM, Georgina has edited, produced and presented radio shows on a range of cultural issues, including the Heritage of the Bogside, the Apprentice Boys of Derry's Maiden City Festival and the Banks of the Foyle Halloween Carnival.
Georgina has also travelled to Italy to participate in a Peace Camp with other young people from countries including Germany, Palestine and Israel, and enjoyed learning about other walks of life.
"Through Verbal FM I have learned a lot about the cultural history of Derry", Georgina said. "I would like a career in the media to explore our cultural heritage further and inform other people about it".
Aideen McGinley, Chief Executive of Ilex Urban Regeneration Company, is excited about the opportunities young people like Georgina will be presented with if the bid is successful.
"Winning UK City of Culture 2013 will provide a great boost to the city and its people. It is important that there are opportunities for education and the development of our people in the year of culture, so the next generation has the chance to learn new skills".
Georgina is hoping the designation of Derry~Londonderry will allow her the chance to develop her interests and follow her dreams.
