"School 4 Africa"

On Monday 22nd March St. Mary's College Creggan opened their Role Model Week with a keynote speech from Sr. Deirdre Mullan. Sr. Deirdre - a former St. Mary's staff member - is now working in the United Nations as Director of Mercy, Global Concern.

Last year Sr. Deirdre asked the school to help build a secondary school in Mukura and it was agreed that St. Mary's would try to raise the necessary money. She was delighted to receive a cheque for £5000 towards the building of the new school. A group of year 9 pupils raised £3000 and Eamon O'Hare of O'Hare and McGovern (who are building our new school at Northland Road) contributed another £2000. Fundraising will now continue until there is enough money to build the school.

Sr. Deirdre spoke movingly about the lack of educational opportunity for children, especially girls in Africa. Mukura is one of over twenty five slums believed to be the home of over 60% of Nairobi's population. The majority are uneducated and unskilled and mainly jobless. They live in very poor shacks mostly made from corrugated iron sheets, cardboard or plastic. There is no sanitation, electricity or running water. No bins or waste collection. Most of the waste goes directly into the nearby river through open sewers. The key to progress is Education. Our pupils and teachers were very moved by what they heard and the photos they saw.

St. Mary's will continue to do all they can to raise money for this project as we believe that in this way we are being practical Christians, helping those who have so much less than ourselves. Eamon O'Hare has also agreed to help. If you wish to contribute or help with fundraising please contact the office staff at St. Mary's.
